Got invited to do a 2018 in 2018 challenge.  Figured since I was training for a marathon and an ultra a couple months after, that this goal could easily be in reach.  Yesterday was sideways water, so had to wait for today and pound some miles out on the tread.  Will be so much happier when days are longer and temperatures are warmer

Miles Against Dip:  4.75

Total M.A.D: 2969

Today's MAD: Zero

Swimming MAD total: 9, added a few miles lately.

Total Running MAD: 5152.9 miles since 1/2/2010

Weight: 213 - jumped over the holiday's.  Back on the more structured diet.  I have some lofty goals for my weight/health this year.  I'll let you know what they are after I get a few weeks under my belt.

No running on the horizon.  I have an appointment with a sports medicine doctor on Thursday.   The tendonitis continues to bother me after resting the foot since Thanksgiving.   I'm hoping for some additional answers/solutions besides rest.

Tentative race schedule.

March 10 - Anthem 5K

March 24 - Rodes 10K

April 7 - Papa John's 10 Miler

Arrived at the pool to see a young lady on the one treadmill that is safe to run on.  Was like, "oh crap!"  went into the weight room and was happy to see she had finished.  Since work out was during lunch, chose to do a fast paced shorter run, so blasted out 4.25 at speeds of 6.7 and 7 mph.  Tomorrow is to be a slower paced, long distance run

Miles Against Dip:  4.25

Total M.A.D: 2973.25

Miles towards 2018 challenge: 9

January 4 & 8, 2018

Got one more day in last week, before the meetings piled up and the weather turned to serious crap.  On Sunday, calm weather excited me about a nice run after church, but it was the same time as the memorial/celebration of life for a young colleague that passed suddenly in November.  So, the run had to wait for yesterday.  Finally got an outside run in.  Slow miles, but felt good.

Treadmill again, and have to go in early tomorrow.  The lack of perceived progress seems to make treadmill running mind numbing, but I rather have some mileage than no mileage.

Yearly MAD: Will update....

So, I have not done as good of a job keeping up with my running here. I quit using my watch during my weekly runs because I wasn't disciplined enough to not constantly obsess over my pace. I have kept up with mileage on an app since I carry my phone to listen to music. Anyway, I stumbled into last weekend severely undertrained. I knew that I could cover the distance, it was just a matter of how quickly I could do it.

The morning of the race dawned to rain. Lots and lots of rain. The forecast all week had been calling for it. How in the hell is it that the weather seems to be all over the place, but when there is something you want to do that's weather dependent, they NAIL the forecast like 23 days out. And 9 times out of 10, it's not the weather you want! So, needless to say, I was ready for the rain. Starting temps were supposed to be in the low 50's with a steady rain. Check. I got to the race with plenty of time to lube up, tape up, and find shelter near the start/finish. As I stood around in the pre-dawn darkness, listening to blue music blaring over the speakers, I ran into one of my college buddies and his wife! Super cool to see them in person instead of social media. Soon, it was time for all of us to gather up on Pascagoula St in downtown Jackson, listen to an electric guitar rendition of the national anthem, and *BOOM*, we're off to the races! WIthin the first mile, we pass the Jackson State University brass section of the marching band (the Sonic Boom of the South). They were belting out some kick ass music! We wound through the JSU campus, back through the start/finish line, then turned north. For the next few miles, everything felt fine. The course is fairly hilly, but nothing that I haven't handled before. A steady drizzle fell, but it was actually nice. I was doing a good job of staying hydrated and even took a gel around halfway. Then at mile 10, I felt it. A sudden jolt of electricity through my right calf. The same thing happened in the same calf during this marathon two years ago. It was only for a split second, but I knew what was coming. So, I immediately slowed to a walk and stayed at that pace for about 200 yards. I was able to run almost another 3/4 of a mile before it hit again. So, I walked again. Thus the way the rest of my race went. Run, pain, walk....rinse and repeat. I did a pretty good job of staving off the cramps. It never got debilitating. I alternated water and gato as much as possible. This was merely a result of being undertrained. The biggest thing was, I never lacked energy. I just couldn't "go" because of the potential for cramps. I crossed the finish line in just over 2:17. For a 10:20'ish avg pace. I actually raced at the pace I predicted I would! I though 2:15-2:30 was likely.

Lessons learned. I need to train a bit more just so my legs are adjusted. I GOTTA hit some hills. Running in my flat ass circle of a neighborhood ain't cuttin' it. I still LOVE running. I lost some balance in my life when this whole journey started. I tend to go headstrong into new stuff and running was no different. Finding a good balance is critical for me. I'm almost there, but I gotta add a little more running back in.

Now, I gotta schedule another race!

Races this year:

MS Blues Half Marathon- 1-28-18 FINISHED! 2 hours 17 minutes

Hey brothers!  I just did the volunteer version of Forget the PR 50K on Saturday.  Holy crap I was under trained and I am paying for it now!  It was  a lot of fun.  I just got our old laptop reformatted because mine died.  I hope I can post up a little more often then I have been. Hope ya'll are doing well.  Once I get my mileage chart updated from the last two months I will post up some numbers.

Cheers!

Total MAD since 3/23/18    61.1

Weight: 147 Total Lost 50 and change since August 2017

Was cycling since October 2017 up until early March when I ran my bike into the ground.  I was doing 25 to 28 miles per day split up before work and after towards the end.  Started running right after but did not keep records until 3/23.

Big race planned in Feb of 2019 but will find some smaller ones to build up to it.
