I noticed there may be a few fly fishers on the board. Anybody heading out soon or been out recently. What do you like to fish for etc.?

Welcome to the group, baetis. I see you posted in July. Great. Just quit one day at a time.
I was all set to go today to a small lake close by; it was too windy. Casting is one thing, but in a belly boat the wind can just be too much. With the wind today, kicking would have only been a suggestion for the direction I wanted to go. dry.gif

No problem - I'll get out there soon enough.

As far as fishing and not dipping - I know you didn't ask, but it has to be on your mind; it is totally doable. It turns out that it is actually more enjoyable. True story!
Post up when you get ready to fish, there are lots of ideas out there for meeting that trigger head on and winning.

Funny you should say that. That is a major concern of mine. For me i can go a day or two without a chew if I am at work or in the city. Get me on a trout stream or golf course(pretty much anything outdoors) and I can't go 10 seconds. I try to justify it by saying i only do it when fishing, etc. Unfortunately, when you go to the driving range or fish 3-4 days a week and sneak a couple here and there it's pretty much full time. In fact, I realize I go to the driving range so i have an excuse to have a chew.

Anyway, that will be my real challenge. Tobacco free Fly fishing. 20+ years fly fishing with a chew.

Thanks for the help. I will let you know when i m heading out. Probably this weekend. Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

wow, only three posts? I guess that it is hatch time so.... I used seeds to get me through fishing with no dip. Now, I don't even think about it.

Hey all!!

I'm a noob at this, but really enjoy it so far.

What's a good, not too expensive reel to purchase? I live in Florida, so salt water will definitely come into play!

Going fishing on the west slope of Colorado for the next five days. Run off is still high, tail waters should be good.
TT your question about reels I have only fly fished fresh water light tackle around 5wt stuff.
One fairly inexpensive reel that I ended up liking alot was made by Okuma not sure about the heavier stuff though.

Thanks Colo. I'll take a look at Okuma.
Have fun out there this week.

I agree. I have an okuma reel - it's been great. I actually just packed it into the car. Heading up to Erie, PA to fish this weekend. Not sure if I'll fish the lake or one of it's many streams.

I have an orvis rod, which I also love, but they are pricey.

Pricey!!! No doubt.

I had NO idea how pricey fly equipment could be.

I'll be hunting on ebay for a reel.

Anybody ever take a fly fishing course? I'm self-taught, so I think some professional instruction might be beneficial but I'm reluctant to spend the money. Thoughts?

I took a fly fishing course, but if you have got the basics down then there really is no point, thats just my opinion though... If you want to be the best you should probably pay for it, but if its just a simple hobby then nah.

Actually, I did. My sister was working at a fly shop and the owner gave workshops. I attended one. It was beneficial. Not unlike a batting coach. Sure, anyone can stand at the plate and swing at the ball, but that outside observer is very helpful.
The other "lesson" I took was from a friend who is a professional guide. Once again, the outside observer sees things you can't. Of course teacher 1 and 2 had slightly different techniques and priorities - but both of them caught fish too.

The best advice? Practice casting in the backyard not on the stream. When you are fishing you want to be fishing and catching - not practicing then.

Kinda the opposite of women, huh? Practice away from home, but be sure to perform well in your own backyard? wink.gif

ColoQuitter - A Half day wading trip with a guide is like $250, better spent elsewhere unless you got extra cash or are somewhere brand new to you. Just like women or the opposite?

Has anybody mastered the wading pants? Mine worked for the first half hour and then they filled up....is it just me?

Filled up? Aren't you supposed to use the facilities before you get in the water?

fished the Bighorn in MT in early March. did real well. River is very fishable with lots of 16 inch fish.

Wife caught her first trout of many out there with me.
