Hi,

I just got snagged breaking down by my wife after 10 months of not having any Skoal. The physical symptoms I can handle.....I know they suck, but I can get past them. It's the mental part. I'm at my wits end. I know I can get past it physically, but no matter what, my mind always brings me back and I don't know what to do. prescribed drugs haven't worked. exercise hasn't worked.

Help? any ideas, here or in private messages welcomed.

Jeff,
Penguin posted this message a few days ago in the Oct. quit group. I am taking the liberty of posting it here. I doubt it will answer all your questions, but it certainly deals with the mental part of beating our addiction.

Another tool for all of you to use in your battle for freedom. POSITIVE THOUGHT and POSITIVE WORDS. Using positive words and thoughts result in positive actions. This is a difficult journey, and there are many opportunities for us to be "unsure" about our abilities. Those "unsure" or even "negative" thoughts can steer us down a path we don't want to go down. When we use negative words or thoughts, our ambition and our "inner flame" flickers out and we start to succumb to those very thoughts we are having...."I can't do this", "It's too hard", "I think I might be able to do this", "I sure hope I can last". Even though we may think we are being positive, our mind is developing loop holes to convince us or allow us to cave. "I can't" is pretty self explanitory...well, I tried, but I knew it'd be too tough/I knew I had too much on my plate/Insert excuse here. The "I think" and "I hope" comments direct us towards that idea of the Old College Try mentality. Well, I gave it a go, what more could I expect? You have to use comments that are positive and allow no room or options for failure. I WILL MAINTAIN MY QUIT. I AM QUIT. I CAN AND WILL DO THIS! Take pride in what you are doing and hold your head up high. Using positive terms and positive thoughts adds a layer of accountability to YOURSELF. You take yourself out of the equation when you use those words like try, hope, wish....it directs you towards a mentality of "only a miracle will allow you to succeed" and if a miracle doesn't occur, then it wasn't meant to be. We are allowing ourselves to accept failure or convince ourselves that it was out of our hands. Your quit is always in your hands and is always moving forward because of the choices YOU MAKE. POSITIVE CHOICES net POSITIVE RESULTS. POSITIVE THOUGHTS net POSITIVE CHOICES. There is a cycle here.

I was a competitive athlete most of my life. I started wrestling when I was 3 years old in Western Pennsylvania. I was never a "large" or "muscular" child in my youth. Although wrestling is a sport where each grappler weighs within a few lbs of each other, often times, one athlete will be stronger than the other. In most cases, my opponent was stronger than I, yet I won most of my matches. Wrestling involves more than just strength. It involves KNOWLEDGE of the moves (your quit), conditioning (stamina) and SELF CONFIDENCE (Positive thoughts). If I ever went into a match thinking I was going to lose, I would have lost that match before I even set foot on the mat. The same mentality occurs here. If we don't believe that we can make it through the day, then odds are, you will have convinced yourself you have no chance of succeeding.

I took a sports psychology class in college (minor in athletic coaching) and 90 percent of that class talked about believing in yourself, pushing through adversity with a positive outlook, and always using positive terms to build self confidence. We even got into the physical aspect of confidence. Looking up and to the right shows confidence while starring down and to the left shows a lack of confidence. HOLD YOUR HEAD UP HIGH...be confident in yourself. And give 100 percent. Don't hold back. Don't be afraid to jump in with both feet.

Another analogy using sports. When someone is injured and sits out for a few games or competitions, they sit out until they are confident they can play again. Rushing back early from an injury usually results in the athelete getting injured again. In some cases, it is because the athelete just isn't healed. In MANY cases, the athlete is HOLDING BACK because they are afraid of giving 100 percent and reinjuring themselves. And when they hold back, that is usually when they hurt themselves.

Don't hesitate in your quit, don't quit with 1/2 a heart. don't allow the lack of confidence to dictate the direction of your quit.

YOU ALL ARE QUITTERS, YOU WILL QUIT, YOU ARE CONFIDENT THAT YOU CAN OVERCOME THE WORST OF THE CRAVES, YOU HAVE GOTTEN THROUGH DAY 1, YOU WILL THEN GET THROUGH DAY 2 AND DAY 3 AND DAY X! YOU WILL SUCCEED. YOU WILL WIN THE BATTLE. YOU WILL COME OUT ON TOP. YOU WILL BEAT THIS ADDICTION. YOU WILL MOVE FORWARD EACH DAY. YOU WILL ACCOMPLISH YOUR QUIT GOALS TODAY. YOU WILL SUCCEED! There is no wish, hope or try here...there is only ACHIEVEMENT AND SUCCESS! There is no doubt here, THERE IS ONLY VISION OF SUCCESS. THERE IS NOTHING THAT WILL STAND IN OUR WAY, NOTHING WILL KEEP US FROM ACHIEVING OUR GOALS.

Today's ACCOMPLISHMENTS were yesterday's dreams...and are the stepping stones for tomorrow's SUCCESS!

Pornographic movies should keep your mind off it.

Perhaps a more realistic solution than constant porn: buy a rubik's cube and play with it anytime you start thinking about dip for a few minutes until you have to get back to work.
Also, when you chew a mouthful of seeds you have to concentrate on cracking them and getting the seed out and spitting the shell and it can also keep your mind off it while you get your oral fixation taken care of.

Penguin is definitely on to something here. I want to add just a bit more. It sounds like you are still associating great pleasure with dipping. You have to retrain your mind to associate "Poison, Toxins, cancer, dip spills, nasty, tooth loss" with dipping. When you feel a crave, immediately think of all these associations. You have to retrain your mind so that dipping is associated with pain, not pleasure. After a while, it will work and you will automatically associate undesirable things with dipping. It takes several weeks, but I promise you it works, and your mind can learn new tricks.
