Wrestled at Millersville University of PA (Div.I but a small school) 94-99. Love college wrestling and I am stoked that I get the Big 10 Network! Millersville is in the East Regional on only get a Champ and 2 wildcards to go to the big dance. Missed 3 years in a row...my senior year I was screwed...Oh well.
Northwestern has a great upperweight this year...I saw him at Midlands...WOW!

Caught the Indiana PSU match last night on the Big Ten Network. PSU had the lead going into HYW, 17-14. Indiana has never tied or beaten PSU. The PSU HYW is a freshman. Had to change the channel, so I don't know if Indiana tied, beat or lost to PSU. Some outstanding wrestling leading up to that match. The 197 match, PSU was penalized for Stalling 4 times (the 2 point penalty). With 48 seconds left, there was concern that the PSU wrestler would get nailed for stalling again and be DQ'd. He wasn't, but gave up a major that gave Indiana a good chance to tie or win with the final match.
PSU is hosting the Big Ten Championships. I might try to go up and watch them this year. Top level wrestling for sure!

Big XIIs are here in Lincoln. I can't wait to take the lad. NU is currently ranked 4 and I would think higher had there not been two returning All Americans had to get booted from the team for showing their, um, goods on a website (for cash).

Great stuff.
I think the best match of the night will be Burroughs (NU) v. Poeta (IL) at 157. Burroughs is a Jr and Poeta a Sr. Both won their respective conf. tournaments. Burroughs is undefeated and I think Poeta is as well. He is listed 13-0 heading into the tournament. Burroughs is one of the most explosive person I've ever seen on his feet. I'd put him up there with anyone, including Sanders. Poeta is very aggressive on his feet as well. It should work to be a good match.
NU has Brester at 197 as well. He and Varner have been ranked 1&2 all year. Varner holds the season edge 2-1.
I'm still a little pissed Donahoe got himself kicked off NU. He's in the finals as well. We may take 3rd, (2nd unlikely, but mathematical). If we had Donahoe's points (he's in the finals and should win), we'd be likely to lift the NC trophy.

Minus the backflip as the match wound down, Caldwell beating Metcalf was probably the most intense match of the evening. Burroughs and Peota was just as high paced and exciting coming down to the end of the match for the win, but I think the Caldwell Metcalf match took the early on attention away from that match.
Did anyone get a chance to watch the 3 place round matches? ASU has a wrestler by the name of Robles who has one leg and took 4th. He almost turned his opponent at the end of the match to win. Truely an inspirational story letting us know, as long as we believe, we can achieve! I am hoping that his match will be on YouTube at some point.
Herbert had a closer match than I thought he would have had.
I might try to go out to the championships next year, I hear they are in Omaha.

Ditto on Caldwell. I was a little disappointed he did the back flip. While I don't condone Metcalf pushing him, I understand his frustration. (injury time out for a back spasm--then does a back flip?

)
I heard about the ASU wrestler, heck of a story. The Qwest Center in Omaha is hosting. There will be a pretty good NU contingency as we've got a fairly good team next year. You're not from this neck of the woods are you?

Live just south of Baltimore and northeast of DC. There should be some great, great match ups for next year. Might see if Papa Penguin would want to take a trip out and enjoy some great D-I wrestling. I went to the 98 NCAA's at Penn State and in 02 when they were in Albany. Time to get back out there and enjoy the atmosphere again.

Oh no, not another wrestler. My boss was a wrestler in high school and college. He used to volunteer coach for the local junior high school when we were back in Nevada. I've heard all kinds of wrestling stories over the past 5 years and I still don't understand a thing about this sport. All I know about wrestling I learned in the movie Vision Quest.

It was surprising to me, but when UFC type events started in the early 90's I noticed that people from different fighting styles came to compete. Judo, wrestling, kung-fu, karate, boxing etc... The most successful were the wrestlers.

I love wrestling. 3BD, I'm surprised you aren't more of a fan. It is all about individual responsibility. You either win or lose based on your performance alone. There are no time outs, no teammates; no one else to blame or praise. Self discipline is paramount. The only problem I have with wrestling is that is where I picked up my disgusting chew habit. I used it to not eat. Bad stuff.
I think we're going to watch the Huskers dual against Wisconsin tomorrow. Hopefully, they will put the championship finals on tv again this year. Watch for Jordan Burroughs from nebraska at 157. I can only think of 1 or 2 people faster on their feet than him. He is a blast to watch.

OH YA!!!! Wrestling season!!!!! I got my alma maters schedule a few weeks ago off the net, and it looks like I should be able to make quite a few of the matches! The only thing that might interfere will be grad classes (depending on the night).
I am still thinking about making the trip out to the mid west in the spring for the tourney. I just have to get the dates to make sure they don't interfere with my marathon. I haven't signed up for it yet, but am really leaning towards the Va Beach marathon on March 21...I got a bad feeling it might be that weekend.
Being close to MD, I will probably head out to see a few of their matches as well.

DAMN!!! Jordan Burroughs is out for the season. He tore his ACL & PCL in the first period of a match a couple of days ago. He ultimately lost the match snapping his 44 win mark. Hopefully he can get a medical red shirt and be back next year. Even more, I hope he regains his quickness. That guy is faster off his knees than most are on their feet.

Not at all. He got tangled up and his knee bent in an unnatural way. The tough thing for guys like Burroughs is that being #1 means they get everyone's best match. Sometimes a significant underdog will try some unorthodox things to get an upset. I don't think what happened here was dirty at all. Instead, the guy was trying to hang on when normally he would concede the point and wrestle out of it. The guy risked giving up almost certain back points, but he was trying to hit a homerun. Instead, Burroughs got hurt. Too bad--he is a really classy guy. He always stuck around after matches to hi-5 kids, sign posters and just kid around. My lad thinks he is awesome. Hopefully, he can get back to where he was. I truly think he will be an olympic medalist someday.

That sucks. I have only caught a few matches on the Big Ten network so far this year. It won't be until after the new year when I can get out to some local matches and to my alma mater to see them wrestle.
As far at 3BD's question, wrestling is a sport where the athlete will end up in multiple unorthodox positions throughout the match. Wrestling's foundation is built on leverage...the man (or woman) who wins the leverage battle, often times will win the move or point. Some athletes can gain an edge because they are like 'Gumby" and can twist the right way to gain the leverage they need to gain the takedown or reversal. And wrestlers typically do live up to the quote "somethings got to break" because both wrstlers typically go all out...The refs even let things go further than a typical observer would like to see, but knows that it's part of the sport.
Very few wrestlers ever go out to hurt their opponent. In fact, many wrestlers would rather lose a tough match than win via a medical default or forfiet.
As bulky as wrestlers tend to be, they are amazingly limber. Every now and then, the body just gives.
Hopefully he will get that MED Redshirt and can come back strong for next season. He will be done for a good 6 months tho...maybe more. So I bet he does lose a step in his speed, and that sucks.

I agree with what you say Pengy. I wasn't trying to imply at all that Burroughs was injured due to a dirty move. It was more of an issue where the opponent hung on in an odd way where most would concede and get off the bottom. This guy didn't want to give up the takedown and concede the point, plus it was close to the edge of the mat and he was trying to get out of bounds. Goofy injury. Hopefully, he returns better next year.
I'm still excited for the nationals in Omaha. You can pretty much crown Iowa, then second to Iowa St., but there should be some great matches. I'm interested in 197 between Varner of Iowa St and Brester from Nebraska. The two have been 1-2 for a few years and have had some great matches. Brester beat Varner once last year for the Big XII title, but lost the national championship match. Varner went to the World Championships this last year and got some great experience. He has been wrestling lights out this year.

Ole - the wrestler
Before the final match, the Norwegian wrestling coach came
to Ole and said, "Now, don't forget all the research we've
done on this Russian. He's never lost a match because of
this 'pretzel' hold he has. Whatever you do, do not let him
get you in that hold! If he does, you're finished."
Ole nodded in acknowledgment.
As the match started, Ole and the Russian circled each
other several times, looking for an opening. All of a sudden,
the Russian lunged forward, grabbing Ole and wrapping
him up in the dreaded pretzel hold. A sigh of disappointment
arose from the crowd and the coach buried his face in his
hands, for he knew all was lost. He couldn't watch the
inevitable happen.
Suddenly, there was a scream, then a cheer from the crowd
and the coach raised his eyes just in time to watch the Russian
go flying up in the air. His back hit the mat with a thud and
Ole collapsed on top of him making the pin and winning the
match.
The crowd went crazy. The coach was astounded.
When he finally got his wrestler alone, he asked, "How did
you ever get out of that hold? No one has ever done it before!"
Ole answered, "Vell, I vas ready to give up ven he got me in
dat hold, but at da last moment, I opened my eyes and saw
dis pair of testicles right in front of my face. I had nuttin' to lose
so wid my last ounce of strength I stretched out my neck and

I went for a run this morning at 930am. At 915am, the news said dusting to an inch of snow...northern end of the city was to get NOTHING. Got about an inch during my run when I finished at about 1115. We have about 5 to 6 inches right now. Beltway was a mess, atleast 2 dozen accidents on the 10 mile stretch we were on...until we heard another interstate was closed in both directions at the state border...just turned around and limped back home. 3.5 hours in the car to travel less than 30 miles. HOW does a weatherman get paid when they are not even playing the same sport, let alone in the same ballpark when they predict this stuff? Geez.

I had the Olympics to keep me company. I do not care for all the "feel good" stories. Don't get me wrong, some of them are great motivating stories, but when there are 15 hours of sports going on, and NBC only covers about 10 hours of it, I want to stay engrossed in sports...not 30 minutes of story, 10 minutes of comercial and 5 minute of competition. grrr. So I watched Fin and Russia womens hockey uninterupted! It's sports. Hoping to catch some curling at noon on Tuesday!

HAHAHAHA! I just read about it! I went to Edinboro in from 1999-2001 when Koshceck was wrestling there and haven't really followed them since other than to watch Matt King in nationals back in 2003 (or maybe 2004?).

Had Donahoe and Kenny Jordan not made some seriously bad decisions, Nebraska would have won the National Championship last year. Donahoe caught on at Edinboro and still is pissed at NU for releasing him. Kenny Jordan, I think, went to Purdue. But, I don't think he is wrestling anymore.
The crazy thing about the whole ordeal is that neither is homosexual; they did the solo shuffle for the money. Paul's trademark Nebraska tatoo on his leg gave him away.

Hoping to head up to Princeton to watch my alma mater, Millersville U of PA, wrestle on Saturday. Just trying to find a rider for the trip up and back...not looking good. I still have a few days to try to convince some friends.

I'll be back in the Pittsburgh area around February of 2011. The next time Edinboro wrestles Millersville after that, we will both be there.

PSAC's FOR SURE!!!!!!
Never wrestled Edinboro in a dual meet in my tenure at Millersville. We had Lock Haven EVERY year and CLARION EVERY year and Bloomsburg EVERY year...(top 10 in the country every year)...but Edinboro was always off the list.
We will meet up for PSAC's that weekend!

Has anyone decided if they are going to Omaha for nationals? I was really pumped to go (I'm in Lincoln, only 40 mins away) to watch Burroughs from Nebraska. However, he got hurt and is out. Our other two studs likely won't win it all (Brester at 197 is undefeated, but has to battle Varner from Iowa State) and Dwyer makes goofy errors to derail his chances.
If you are going, let me know. The Qwest Center really knows how to host athletic events, and I can give you a few pointers for things to do in Omaha.

I wish I could go, but saving for the summer family vacation takes priority. I'll be interested to see if Metcalf from Iowa doesn't choke again.

Was hoping Papa Penguin and I would make the trip, however I will be running in a marathon the Sunday after nationals...so I will have to bypass it this year.

I'm watching the Big Ten wrestling finals on the Big Ten Network right now. #1 nationally ranked senior Gopher Jayson Ness cruised to a 133lb title with a 9-3 decision over Iowa's Daniel Dennis. Ness looks to be good and ready for the national finals.

Ohio State's Plamer just upset Iowa's Brent Metcalf. Huge win for Palmer after 4 career losses to Metcalf. These two should meet again in the national finals.

Amazing match. Keep an eye on 197 between Varner of Iowa State and Brester of Nebraska. They've basically been 1-2 for the last 2.5 years. Brester has only beat Varner once, but every match has been amazingly close. Varner is a stud and started to break into the international scene last summer.
