Never Give Up
Remember to never give up; never have doubt.
Those ups and downs are what life is all about.
You try and try your absolute best
and somehow struggle like all the rest.
At times it seems you just can’t do it.
Yet all it takes is putting your mind to it.
The mistakes that you make along the way,
create a stronger person to defeat another day.
No one can tell you the steps you must take.
And those choices become the decisions you'll make.
Believe in yourself and all the power that you hold.
Aspirations are created by the young and the old.
But it has to start here and it has to start now.
I'm sure you’re sitting there wondering how.
It begins when you quit and set an example for others.
Here at first strangers soon make up quit sisters and brothers.
So if you’re struggling with addiction and searching for belief.
Simply reach out to the others and you'll soon find relief.
Quitting means you want this. It’s coming from your heart.
Don’t wait until tomorrow when this moment you can start.
Take this wonderful opportunity and I promise you'll see.
You'll never be alone because you're standing here with me.

The Effects of Physical Withdrawal
Anxiety, Anger, Irritability, Impatience and Restlessness - These are normal temporary effects of physical withdrawal from nicotine. Our life long roller coaster cycles of rising and falling blood nicotine levels are now ending. Your mind is in the process of resuming control of the more than 200 neurochemicals that nicotine had directly and indirectly taken hostage, including select adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin pathways. In resuming control the brain is making sensitivity re-adjustments associated with mood, reward, stimulation and anxiety. In trying to protect your mind from the deadly pesticide nicotine it actually desensitized important neurochemical circuits by reducing receptor sites and diminishing the number of transporters.
If a nicotine user remains 100% nicotine free for just 72 hours they'll likely begin to notice the underlying current of recovery anxieties easing off as their brain's neurons begin bathing in nicotine-free oxygen rich blood serum and the brain's sensitivity adjustments begin bearing fruit. Although our quickly healing body is now 100% nicotine free and most of the normal symptoms of adjustment have reached their peak, it will take 10 days to two weeks before our mind and body become fully accustomed to functioning with the absence of nicotine and many of the other 4,000+ chemicals present in each dipping chew.
The early healing is rapid. Deep breathing with mind relaxation, together with a bit of physical activity, can help diminish anxieties. Adjustment of caffeine intake and limiting sugars can also have a calming effect. Acidic fruit juices, like cranberry, may help accelerate extraction of the blood's remaining nicotine and decease the maximum of 72 hours required for the body to completely metabolize all nicotine.
There is a detailed cessation effects study by Marcia M. Ward, entitled "Self-reported abstinence effects in the first month after chewing cessation," published in Addictive Behaviors, 26 (2001) at pages 311-327. Its findings are fascinating. For example, it may be difficult to believe but, on average, anxieties peak on day one (within 24 hours) and within two weeks return almost to pre-cessation levels. Regarding anxiety, be sure you understand why ex-Chewers only need half the amount of caffeine as Chewers. Irritability, often anxiety's aftermath, seems to peak at about 48 hours while restlessness peaks at 72 hours. According to the study, both begin hovering back around pre-cessation levels within two weeks.
Anger apparently peaks for the average quitter at about 48 hours (day 2) and within 72 hours is beginning to return to almost pre-cessation levels. Amazingly, nicotine assumed command of the mind's adrenaline circuitry and a small release was part of our high. When taking back control, anger and fear (fight or flight) are our means of releasing adrenaline. It isn't unusual to find yourself intentionally attempting to induce adrenaline releases by promoting conflict or feeling fearful about permanently altering your mind's sense of normal from "nicotine normal" back to "you."
While awaiting re-sensitization, find ways to vent frustrations and release adrenaline that won't cause needless hurt to family members, loved ones, friends or co-workers. Walk, run, vent into a pillow, find a punching bag, bend a piece of steel, or even bite your lip during early withdrawal if that’s what it takes. Discuss your feelings with family, friends or within your support system.
Following serious challenge, write yourself a loving letter that can be read a year from now that accurately describes what chemical withdrawal and early psychological recovery were like and why you were more than willing to endure it. The mind does not remember pain or the bad times. In fact, you memories of "Glory Week" will rapidly fade within just a few short weeks. Give yourself the present gift of future memory. It may be just the motivation you'll need to avoid temptation tomorrow.
Occupy your time. Try enjoying your favorite activity, sport or hobby. Celebrate each hour of freedom. Keep a positive attitude and review your reasons for beginning this journey. If you need a break, briefly clear your mind of all negative thoughts and chatter by taking slow deep breaths while focusing exclusively upon your favorite person, place, or object. Don’t allow the seeds of false reasoning to fester and infect your logic or desire. Let intelligence serve as courage as you break free from years of slavery to the dictates of a chemical master.

The Caffeine/Nicotine Interaction
If you feel jittery, extra anxious or are having trouble sleeping after a few days, take a look at your caffeine consumption levels. As shown by the below study, nicotine doubles the rate at which the body depletes caffeine and some caffeine users may find that they cannot tolerate caffeine consumption at pre-quitting levels. If you are feeling extra anxious or jittery you may want to experiment with reducing the quantity or strength of caffeinated drinks or products. If you are not having these difficulties it probably is not important to alter anything now.
As previously discussed there is also a nicotine/alcohol interaction. Nicotine is an alkaloid and alcohol an acid generating event within the body. When Chewers drink alcohol it causes them to lose nicotine at an accelerated pace thus resulting in heavier chewing while drinking. Although the situation is similar to caffeine there is one huge difference. Alcohol makes you lose nicotine, thus being responsible for making Chewers chew more when drinking.
Nicotine on the other hand interferes with the body's ability to absorb and utilize caffeine, often resulting in a person using more caffeine in order to maintain their minimum needed level. When they quit chewing and continue to consume the exact same amount of caffeine they could find themselves actually overdosing on caffeine.
So look closely at caffeine if symptoms persist longer than a few days. You don’t need to get rid of it all together but just keep it in doses that will not cause unwanted effects. Your general state will likely be calmer and you’ll experience a feeling of overall well-being that you should be able to maintain for the rest of your life.

"Why Did I Start Chewing?
Why Did I Quit?"
________________________________________
It is pretty funny. People often try to reflect on when and why they started chewing as if thinking that it would answer the daunting question of why they continue to chew. In reality, the reason you start and the reasons you continue are not the same.
Some people start because of peer pressure. But in society today, if peer pressure were going to be the influencing factor, it would be making people quit chewing , not continue to chew.
Some people took up chewing to look older and more mature. How many people in their 30's, 40's, 50's or 60's or beyond want to do everything in their power to look older than they already do?
Others take up chewing out of a sense of rebellion. Their parents, teachers, doctors and other adults told them they couldn't chew. So to show them who was in control, they chewed anyway. Well, how many 60-year-old chewers are there who are chewing today so that they can snub their nose at their 80 to 90 year old parents saying, "you see, you still can't tell me not to chew."
People start for a variety of reasons, but they continue for just one – they became drug addicts, the drug--nicotine. It is interesting though because the same thing happens when the chewer quits. The initial reason that people quit chewing often become secondary in importance to reasons they eventually stay off.
Some people quit to make others happy, or because of non-chewing policies issued at a place of employment. But after quitting, they find they feel better than ever, are calmer, have more energy, have more money, overall are happier and in more control of their own life. Their new reasons may have little bearing to their initial quit reason. In many ways they are better reasons and more lasting. Or, some people who quit for medical risks alone start to realize that not chewing is just a nicer way of life. Sometimes the quality of life becomes more important to them than the concept of length of life.
Whatever your initial reason for quitting was, it is still valid. On top of that there are numerous benefits you may have noticed and some you haven't even thought of yet which are still to be noticed. Some you will never think of but are real anyway. Keep focused on every good reason not to chew. This becomes your ammunition to stay the course, and to ride out those annoying craves or thoughts that can pop out of nowhere.
Whether or not you ever accurately remember why you started to chew, as long as you remember why you quit and why you desire to stay free, you will keep your resolve strong enough to NEVER TAKE ANOTHER DIP!

Second, are there support groups that I can find in my area? And also, any advice is greatly needed and appreciated. I have struggled with the Bear for over 10 years and I NEED to be done NOW. Welcome Surfer and Newbies,
I've was dipping for 21 years and have been quit for 426 days now and I feel like I've been reborn. To follow through with this group, full speed ahead, truly intending to once and for all put this beast to bed, is the best decision you could make in your life (well, actually, never starting to dip could have been the best decision, but there's no need to go there).
I recommend that you do the following:
Read, read, read and then read some more...of the information on this site. Read all of it. When ever you have spare time, read. There is so much content, coming from so many different angles, that it can completely overwhelm you. As you read more and more, you begin to digest the fact that for the past (insert number) years, you have slowly, methodically and deliberately been killing yourself, and destroying your life and your families as they hung on. Perhaps that appears strong, but for me that was the case. As you begin to read and learn more, you may find out that you were more controlled than you even realized.
I really encourage everyone new to read information related to Jenny Kern. My wife has said that she has never seen me cry. Jenny Kern's story made me cry. Start at this link. Make sure you read her note to Matt, and see if you can find her diaries. They cronical her husbands last 7 months (time from when he first found he had dip-caused mouth cancer, to the day he died), plus it follows the 3-4 years after his death and what it did to his family. See this link.
Intro by 7 iron and Jenny KernRead the HOF and member articles in the library. Read the Cafe posts daily, and when you post in our HOF, go back to your last post and see if there are any new message that can inspire. There are a lot of veteran quitters that will send tidbits that really help and inspire.
Number 2 - post roll call everyday. This is your pledge that you will remain dip free throughout the day. If you decide you want to take a dip, you must call all of your HOF brothers and get approval to have a dip. This brings us to the next thing. Get phone numbers of your brothers and use them. DO NOT be afraid to do this. Anyone in our group will be glad to give you their number, and if you are having a difficult time, call them. They will talk you through it and by the time you are off the phone, your crave will be gone.
You will find as time goes by, and the insanity passes, that these members have helped you to save your life, and as I am here, you will have a strong desire to "Pay it Forward", and help others as you have been helped.
I recommend you start by remembering a few short things.
Everyday you wake up say to yourself:
"TODAY, I will not dip. I'll worry about tomorrow tomorrow." and "Any excuse that says it's okay to have even 1 dip, is an addictive lie."
The worst part is day 1-3. This is when you are fighting the chemical dependency. Your body is craving what you have trained it to crave for so many years. When you get through the 1st 3-4 days, it does slowly get better. Some members like to use the expression, "Enjoy the Suck, " because it sucks, and it's the price you pay for what you have done to yourself, but knowing where you will be going, and the fact that you won't be coming back, they are saying enjoy it for you won't see it again.
Lastly, if you want someone to talk to, PM me anytime. I'll be glad to send my phone number if you would like it. It's a good practice to get as many numbers as you can. If you feel like there is someone that you are developing a bond with, ask them for their number and give them a call.
Welcome to the group. I hope this is as wonderful of a ride for you as it has been for me.

Hi all. I'm new to the site and could use some direction. Hopefully I am posting in the right section. My quit date is officially today, 12/26/2008. First, am I posting in the right area? Second, are there support groups that I can find in my area? And also, any advice is greatly needed and appreciated. I have struggled with the Bear for over 10 years and I NEED to be done NOW. Thanks.
Surfer, right place right time. I will post you in roll. Read the roll call instructions. You'll figure it out. Welcome to freedome. Always a great choice.
Bigmoe
Welcome, Surfer. You are getting lots of good advice here. I just want to re-state - You only need to quit for today. That is your one and only job. Quit for today. Today. Quit.

Second, are there support groups that I can find in my area?
If you want some face-to-face support group meetings, call your local hospital. They will have it, if you are persistent enough to insist finding the right person to talk to.
That was how I found this site. I was looking for support groups in my area. When I found QSSN, I got so busy being involved here, that I forgot all about live groups.
Surfer, they say you can't give what you don't have. I only have 37 days Copenhagen-free, so I can't say I have experience. I will tell you , though, that these guys will only tell you the truth, and you will never be able to B.S. them. They will always encourage you and will always understand you in a way that no non-addict ever could.
This is the safest place on earth for me, when it comes to tobacco.
Stick around for a few days and I think you'll fell the same

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. So far, so good today. I have no product on me, and I won't be chewing tonight as I have to work a very rare night shift starting in an hour. Going forward, how do I "post roll call" each day? Thanks.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. So far, so good today. I have no product on me, and I won't be chewing tonight as I have to work a very rare night shift starting in an hour. Going forward, how do I "post roll call" each day? Thanks.
HOW TO POST ROLL CALL:
Step 1 - Find the most recent Roll Call in your quit group.*
Step 2 - Click on the "Reply" button in the bottom right hand corner of that Roll Call.
Step 3 - Highlight then delete all of the first line of text which reads something like this: [ quote name=........... ]
Step 4 - Highlight then delete all of the last line of text which reads: [ /quote ].
Step 5 - Type your info after the last name in the first group of names (the second group of names is for supporters of your group's members).**
Step 6 - Below the box you just typed in, scroll down and click on the "Add Reply" button.
Step 7 - Pat yourself on the back, because you have just made a solemn promise to your fellow quitters that you will do whatever it takes today not to use tobacco.
Step 8 - Come back tomorrow and we'll do it again!
These instructions can be found just below your quit group... Good Luck and don't worry if ya mess up, one of the Supporters will be along and fix it...
Your doing great, just keep it up ok.. You worry about quitting and we will worry about fixing the roll call.

I have cut my caffeine intake but I probably need to cut it even more. I had a cup of coffee this morning because I forgot to bring a Diet Mt. Dew to work with me today. That was probably my 5th cup of coffee in my entire life.

I will probably try to keep it to 1 bottle of diet dew or 1 cup of coffee per day. I was thinking about which is worse overall to drink everyday. What do you guys think, is coffee or diet soda worse for you? I would think that diet soda is worse but I guess I could be wrong.

It sounds like you have the caffeine under control. You are aware that regular Mt. Dew has high caffeine - right? I do not know about the diet stuff.
Not being able to sleep was absolutely the hardest part of my quit. These things also helped me. Get up and take a walk. Even if it is just down the hall, a little bit of movement helps. Even better - and I admit this is pretty hard for most of us - take a nap. Even if it is just 10 minutes - the benefit can be huge.
End of the story? Do what it takes to stay quit.

Welcome to quitting, Sgreath. You can do this. And Dexter is right. Caving just makes it harder to quit because you are starting over again.
I just read your bio and I have to say that I had a very similar experience. I quit when I started dating my wife. I didn't last for a year like you did, but I did make it six months, and like you fell for the, "I can have just one,"trap. It was another 15 years before I finally found a way to quit with the support from this site. So, it looks like you are way ahead of me on that one.
Anyway - that six month quit was much easier for me too. Comparing it to yours, I have to say that "love in the air" must have a lot to do with beating nicotine craves. Now, if I could find a way to bottle that . . . I think I could make a small fortune.

Sgreath,
I quit a number of times before I really quit. Meaning? I'd never really quit, it was just bloody lip service! The only person I was kidding was myself. You are responsible for the person you're born with, the person you live with, and the person you'll die with (Yule Brennor). You've got the opportunity now to extend your life. It's that fuckin' simple dude. We're here to help. There's tough love at this site man, but you hang in there. We're all doin' it [one day at a time] and we're all a bunch of addicts and we're doin' this thang together. You can do this too.
Breath deep. Punch your pillow if you have too. The crave will go away and you hang until the next. And get past it. And the next. And get past it. That's how it's done. No mystery.
I chewed coconut, seaweed, drank juice, ate raw veggies, (ate almost everything in sight actually), hibernated as best as life would allow. This is a full time occupation for the moment and the most important job you'll ever do.
Good luck, we're here for you.

Sgreath - Day FRICKEN 1 - After a 4 day run w/o the junk I failed today. Back on the horse now, more fog, restlessness.
