Gary - Day 1, I ain't takin' a dip of Cope today!

Really? I'm the first one in this quit group? Oh man, the pressure.... smile.gif I read some of the stories here, and you all are babes in the woods. veritable n00bs at chewing! tongue.gif I've been chewing for roughly 28 years! YIKES! Oh, there have been lulls. My wife at the time, now X, was a smoker, and I thought I could quit chewing by smoking. Man, that was about the stupidest thing to try! Cigarettes are just as hard to quit. That lasted about a year and I went back on the Cope to get off the damn Cigs. At least chew doesn't affect your breathing. One time I quit for almost a year, but went on a long drive and the thought of that long drive without a dip just wouldn't let go. At the time I thought I'd just dip on the drive, well, you all know how well that works. Cope's been my daily companion ever since that drive.

Why now? Wow, so many reasons...#1 Despite being 43, I have two small children, 6 & 8. I'll be damned if I'm dieing before they're adults!! So, I've been thinking more about my health lately, and while I'm in reasonably good shape (I jog 3 or 4 times a week, and my BMI is good), tobacco doesn't fit in with a "healthy lifestyle". #2 the cost. Holy crap! When I started it was 50 cents a can. Now it's over $5. And even though my addiction's been moderate, about 3.5 cans/week, that's still a hell of a lot of money for something that is quite likely slowly killing me. #3 My dad, who has had a tobacco habit (cigs and cope) most of his life was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer. He's in his late 70's, but still, who's to say tobacco didn't have something to do with that? No reason to chance it. #3 Get tired as hell of cleaning out and dumping the damn spit cans. All of you I'm sure have been in a situation where you just haven't kept up with it and before you know it you've got 3 or 4 full cans of spit sitting around with just about the worst smell you can think of that you have to dispose of. Uggh. #4 I bought a new motorcycle, been riding for about 4 years now, but I promised myself if I bought a new bike, and took out the associated loan, I'd pay for part of it by quitting. There are more reasons, but those are the biggies.

How am I doing it? Well, I've tried cold-turkey and that just doesn't work for me. The first 3 days are just too tough. When I quit for the year-long period before, I did it with the help of nicotine gum. I realize I'm just postponing the nicotine withdrawl, and the gum isn't cheap, but I figure if I can make it a month on the gum that'll help me break the triggers I have and can then deal with the nicotine addiction. Plus, the gum, in my experience, doesn't deliver the nice constant flow of nicotine that dip does, so I'm dealing, in some part, with the nicotine addiction, but not all at once.

Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I appreciate this site, and I apologize if I posted too much detail in a thread where I should've just posted one line saying I wouldn't have a dip today.

Thanks,
Gary

On the contrary, it's much better to hear a story than just a name with a day next to it. Thanks for coming in and telling us about yourself.

Whatever it takes, just don't put the cat turds of death in your mouth today. Come here, PM me, PM anyone. I came to this site every hour my first day quit. And second day. And third day. My fourth day was a little better.

So gut it out, embrace the suck, and come here for support whenever you need it. While some people are no-nicotine purists, I happily gobbled the nic gum my first couple of weeks quit, and frankly it was easy to stop compared to stopping the dip.

Whatever you do if you don't dip today, you have succeeded (well, maybe don't go on a killing spree, I guess that would be sort of bad, but God knows I wanted to kill some people my first few days off the Skoal devil).

Gary7, I have been chewing for 24 years and after a quit of 1 1/2 years started back and finally said the h--- with this and quit for good. Been 78 days this time. Stopped cold turkey, just chewing the straws I have in the house. Best thing for me so far. Have used a little Hooch but not much. Keep your spirits high and you will do this one day at a time.

I guess I'll add my 2 cents. 30 years dipping and 218 days quit - thanks to this site and God's grace. Just last night my kids asked me how long I dipped. It led to a discussion about how I was just as addicted after 6 months of dipping as I was after 30 years. It took me until age 45 to have the mental, emotional and spiritual maturity to allow myself to quit. Even so, I'm still addicted and I'm one dip away from a can a day. Oh, and Gary, it's worth it.

QUOTE (Gary7 @ Jun 24 2009, 01:15 PM) *
Gary - Day 1, I ain't takin' a dip of Cope today!

Really? I'm the first one in this quit group? Oh man, the pressure.... smile.gif I read some of the stories here, and you all are babes in the woods. veritable n00bs at chewing! tongue.gif I've been chewing for roughly 28 years! YIKES! . . .

Thanks,
Gary

Gary...there are many 20+ 25+ 30+ year quitters on here. Maybe not in the most recent group but trust me I know for a fact there are a ton on here from lingering around here for so long.

Hey, Gary7.
sign0002.gif 28 years of stupid right here. Some people just don't know how high stupid can be stacked. Now I am 668 days quit. So - it can be done. And everyone here does it one day at a time. Your turn. Make the commitment that you will not pack your lip - just for today. When you do that, the battle is over.
Welcome to quitting. You can do it.

25 year addict, 176 days free. You can do it Gary!

Gary,

There is no cause to be jealous of us. Like Killer said, we are just quitters taking this thing one day at a time just like you. The numbers aren't posted to make us look important or special (they're not supposed to be anyway), they are supposed to be inspirational to you. You can see a gathering of quitters who have made it that far, there is no reason you can't do so also.

Hope to see you again tomorrow.

Folks,

I will be joining your Quit Group tomorrow. I was on Day 9 in the September quit group and fell off after a very stressful day. In the last few days, I had some health issues that were unrelated to chewing. I was in the ER this morning and I *may* need surgery next week unless the issue clears itself up on its own. Needless to say, the stress of the event sent a rush of emotions through me and I caved very early in my quit.

However, after evaluating the situation further, I decided today that I will hop back on the wagon and post up Day 1 right away ftomorrow -- because it doesn't matter either way whether I need surgery or not.

I failed. I admit to it. I post Day 1 again tomorrow.

Welcome Quad. While I hate the circumstances that brought you to the same group I'm in, I am happy I'm not the only one in here. Good luck, and I admire you jumping right back in again. I've quit numerous times and even though I loathed myself for starting up again I never had the strength to just quit again right away.

Good luck, and welcome,
Gary

Killer - I'm a quitter...taking it one day at a time. No tobacco today!
WWB - Hanging with Killer, waiting for Gary7.
Gary7 - Day 2 - No Cope yesterday, and sure as hell none today! Sure was nice not carrying a spit can around with me at home after work, worrying about the kids or dog spilling it. Thanks WWB and Killer!
