Hello All,

My name is Larry Nance. I am in the USAF and am currently deployed. I am ready to start this journey to be dip-free. Why? Well, I have been dipping for 5 or 6 years...I have 4 great kids and an awesome wife back home in the states. I don't want to die of cancer. I want to be a good role model for my kiddos and most importantly, I do not want to be controlled by the drug called nicotine.

That is who I am...am looking forward to meeting you guys and to get through this crap together. Bad thing is that I am about 8 hours ahead of the states right now. So, my quit date is today, 25 OCT...and I hate the "ditsy" feeling you get after a few hours of not having a dip...just feels crappy. But I am going to push through...how long does the chemical addition "feeling crappy" part last??

Welcome to our world, Larry. You made the right call. Now you just need to keep quitting one day at a time.
As far as how long does the crappy feeling last? Well that totally depends on - you never can tell. Every quitter is different and every quit is different. Even so here are some rough guidelines You can expect:
At Day 3 the nicotine is out of your system and the real healing begins. The serious physical need for nic is over, but the mind games have only just begun. For most of us, this is when mental toughness and intestinal fortitude are critical. You will need to retrain your mind, your body to not want nicotine and the way that happens is by depriving yourself of your drug. Expect a variety or withdrawal symptoms. You are going to be grumpy and short tempered. You will probably start eating more. Cut back on caffeine. Little by little, day by day you will heal and get better. How long it will be for you to get past the craves? I don't know. I do know that the longer you stay quit, the less frequent the craves become and the shorter they last.

Coming home nic free will be a great gift for your family, but don't do this for them. Do it for you. They will be the beneficiaries it is true, but you will be the winner.

Muddler---

Thanks for the words and wisdom. You acutally helped me push through a tough crave! I have tried to quit for my kids, and my wife before. I just want to quit for me. And I want to do it "over here" so the grumpy guy that comes out does not mess with my family!! If that makes any sense. And trust me, he is already peeking around the corner...
I will get there..day by day..hour by hour and I will have faith that in the end, I will be nic (and eventually craving) free!!

Only one thing I will add to Mudd's advise.. Stay glued to this site as much as you can, read, read, and read some more.. And, as soon as you can, if you can, get a phone number or an e-mail address of a fellow quitter. You will not believe how important that will be.. People who are active with this site tend to stay quit... nuf said..

Stay true to your resolve Larry, and we will help all we can..

What's up everyone.

Just wanted to introduce myself to you all.
I am 24 and have been dipping since I was 16. I have told myself I was going to quit, "when i graduate highschool" then "when I graduate college" etc etc. I have been saying my new years resolution was to quit for the last 3 years. So far I have never made it more than a week. Some stressor, some problem, anything i could use to go back to dipping I did.
But my mouth has been hurting more than it ever has when I had a dip in. And honestly it scared the shit out of me. So I ordered 6 cans of hooch and today is the day that I stop dipping forever.
Work has really really sucked this morning. My head already hurts, Really really jittery. I want a dip really bad. I am going to stay strong though.
Just wanted to let you guys know who I was, and that I plan on being around for a while.
This one day at a time philosphy is really the only way to look at it IMO.

You are getting plenty done today. Quitting is more important than work for the next couple of weeks. Just don't dip ever again, and you won't have to go through all of this again like I did. Once is enough. It gets better and easier each day. Just stay strong and be determined as hell the first couple of weeks and you will wake up and not need a dip anymore. You may want a dip, but you don't need it. Hang in there bro.
avant09
avant - day 7 dont know that im qualified to offer support being just a few days ahead of you guys but I found this is the archive of an old timers quit group thought it was worthy to share with everyone.

Never Give Up

Remember to never give up; never have doubt.
Those ups and downs are what life is all about.

You try and try your absolute best
and somehow struggle like all the rest.
At times it seems you just can’t do it.
Yet all it takes is putting your mind to it.

The mistakes that you make along the way,
create a stronger person to defeat another day.
No one can tell you the steps you must take.
And those choices become the decisions you'll make.

Believe in yourself and all the power that you hold.
Aspirations are created by the young and the old.
But it has to start here and it has to start now.
I'm sure you’re sitting there wondering how.

It begins when you quit and set an example for others.
Here at first strangers soon make up quit sisters and brothers.
So if you’re struggling with addiction and searching for belief.
Simply reach out to the others and you'll soon find relief.

Quitting means you want this. It’s coming from your heart.
Don’t wait until tomorrow when this moment you can start.
Take this wonderful opportunity and I promise you'll see.
You'll never be alone because you're standing here with me.

Doesn't really sound all that different from my day, except the craving.

What's my point? I dunno, except it's possible to overstate the impact the quitting process is having on your life at the moment. Sometimes feeling lousy is just because...well, just because.

It beats not feeling at all, of course.
