I figured go cold turkey. Gotta be nic free at some point, so might as well start.

Just bit the bullet and stopped cold turkey. Every other method puts you at risk for failure in the long term IMO whereas cold turkey is more of short term risk for failure IMO. With cold turkey once I got past a month I felt confident I would stay quit. Also, knowing coming here having to go back to day 1 and joining a new quit group helped to.

After about 30 years of dipping 1-2 tins per day, I went QSSN and Cold Turkey. A good combo.

I quit cold turkey 457 days ago! I had been meaning to quit with each and every dip for 28 years. Finally, I woke up at 3am with an awful pain in my side and went to the Emergency Room around noon and had my gall bladder removed that evening. Waking up the next morning I realized that I had been dip free for over 24 hours and decided to keep on being free. The next few days sucked as did the next few weeks. However, my first 24 hours was a breeze!

I voted for Cold Turkey. I have been quit 1,059 day I dipped for 38 years. With that said I tried to quit with help from a doctor and nicotine replacement therapy. That failed 3 times I tried to wean myself off that didn't work either. I did use a site similar to this to quit the accountability works. You still have to quit yourself I can't quit for you. I did not use the fake stuff either I just broke the habit period.
This place will help you quit these guys will support you but YOU MUST DO THE QUITTING.

I started out with nic-gum. I felt I needed a crutch after 30 years of Cope, which followed a year long quit that ended in a cave. Like Ohio said, it prolonged withdrawal. But all things considered and everything being the same, I'd probably do it the same if I were back there.

The main reason I say that is that I was 44 days nicotine-FREE before I found this site. In other words, I did 97 days nic-gum & tobacco-free PLUS 44 days nic-FREE (i.e. 141 days into my quit) without a support group or anyone's advice. So, had I found this forum BEFORE I quit, I probably would have done it cold-turkey.

The past is what it is. ;)

Cold turkey is hard, but that does not mean no crutches or aides at all. Fake or herbal chew, gum, hard candy, seeds, straws, tea bags, cotten balls soaked in flavoring, cat turds, or whatever it takes to kill the craves. Worry about the oral fixation later, that is just habit and habits can be broke as easily as they are created. It's the nicotine addiction that has to be stomped out if you are ever going to be free.

I am a firm believer of cold turkey. I've tried NRT's but they just dragged out the "suck".
Bottom line is you have to be ready to quit no matter what the method is! Still have thoughts but not a big deal anymore.
