    Read a lot, Post a lot. Avoid places where you used to buy nicotine delivery devices. Find safe substitutes to help with craves including, but not limited to toothpicks, beef jerky, sunflower seeds, Altoids, sugar free gum.

  5. I'm nicotine-FREE Twelve Years today. I only continue to post to encourage others and to remind myself that I once could not make it through a day without constantly - or as often as possible - having dip in my mouth. Since taking the plunge, I've encountered many, many issues and problems such as are common to humans, but not a single one would have been better with a dip in my mouth. Nicotine does not make anything better, it only feeds the addiction and keeps you enslaved. If you are on the fence, be assured that you can face and enjoy life without nicotine - and also eliminate the worry about its consequences. One hour, one crave, one day at a time with a commitment to do anything necessary to stay nicotine-free will pay off with huge dividends.   6. Nicotine itself should clear from your system by 5 days. However, withdrawal includes the mental aspect, where our minds have come to associate a number of places and activities with dipping. So you will continue to experience craves, but they will decrease over time. When I found this forum, I was at day 44 of being nicotine free and was wondering the same as you. You can kick the nicotine slave master on hour, one crave, one day at a time. Just determine that you will do whatever it takes to keep the victory that you have achieved so far. Remember that it took a period of time to become strongly addicted, so to will take a period of time to regain your freedom from its pull. Numerous of us can assure you that you can regain your freedom from nicotine.     What you say is very important. Even though I've been free for almost 12 years, I must never deny that I am an addict. I will always be only one dip away from falling in to the dark abyss again. Stay free, my friend.

    4,369 days as of today. Until I quit in 2006 at age 54 and after more than 30 years of constant & active addiction, I had been a slave to nicotine so long that I had almost accepted I would die a slave to dip. But I'm still free. One hour, one crave, & one day at a time, I took back control of my life. It was very hard at times, especially the first 5 days, but I determined that I would do whatever it took and endure whatever it took to be free again. It was worth every bit of it.
  9. 12 years ago I went tobacco-free. While I used nicotine gum for another 3 months, this is still an important milestone for me, especially since I was nicotine-free for 44 days before finding this forum.
  10. Work pressure is just an excuse. Every man & woman on this forum faced pressures when quitting. There is not a perfect or even a good time to quit.   13. Monday, I'll be celebrating my 45th wedding anniversary with my One & Only! This will be the 10th in a row without dip! Dip never made anything better. It simply fed the nicotine addiction and made me feel like an idiot.
  14. I'm Euty and I'm an addict. I've been nicotine-FREE for over 9 years and a couple of months. I can't remember the last time that I had the slightest craving for dip, but I know quite well from past experience that it would take only one dip to set me back on the road to full-blown slavery to nicotine and all the baggage that comes with that. So I keep the pledge that I made to myself and fellow quitters in 2006 to take freedom a crave, an hour, a day at a time without dip, no matter what it takes. Life has had many ups and downs during these past 9-plus years, but none of them would have been any easier with a wad of dip in my mouth. None. Instead, I have been free to deal with the downs and fully enjoy the ups. Ladies and Gentlemen, quitting dip and embracing life & freedom is completely worth the discomfort of that process.
  15. Regaining your freedom is like the proverbial journey of a thousand miles: First, a sincere decision to begin and to continue whatever it takes. Then it is a matter of dealing with one crave, one hour, one day at a time. As they add up, you become stronger and one day will be Free again. Euty ~ day 3,372 nicotine Free! That's 9 years and just under 3 months. I have never awaken and regretted staying quit the day before.
  16. Woz, ex-Navy here. I dipped over 30 years, but I am at day 3,332 or just over 9 years nicotine-FREE. The first thing I had to do was commit to quitting no matter what it took, for as long as it took - and I did it for me. You seem to have that kind of integrity. I started with a piece of paper, logging the date and number of hours I had not taken a dip. I kept the paper with me as encouragement. When I had a strong craving, I looked at the accumulated hours and told myself I could hold on another 5 minutes. Craves seldom last more than a few minutes, though they may seem much longer. They hours that accumulated overnight were nice to log. By hour 120, I knew that the physical withdrawal was over, the rest would be mental. I just had to deal with the mental triggers one at a time. Also, after hour 120, I just dealt with one day at a time. Don't worry about more than that - just commit to make it through today. As far as the mechanics, I knew that a lot of the dipping experience is the oral satisfaction, so I stocked up on anything I could chew on to satisfy that whenever a crave would strike. I got toothpicks, peanuts, sunflower seeds, even cotton balls to place in my favorite dip spot. I bought sugar free gum and tins of Altoids. Anything that I could think of to chew. ON A SIDE NOTE: Be aware that dip will halve the effects of caffeine. So if you drink coffee, as I did when I quit, the same number of cups will double the effects when yo are quit and more coffee is worse. Early in my quit, what I though were hard craves were actually the caffeine I was consuming. I wish I had known that when I first began. Finally: know that you will always be a nicotine addict. When you reach a point that dip no longer has a strong pull, you cannot have just one for old time's sake. That one dip will enslave you to nicotine all over again.

The bonds of nicotine are so strong that, in my 30s, I watched a grandfather and two uncles die from lung cancer and, in my late 40s, saw my strong father suffer a stroke from smoking most of his life that left him in a nursing home, paralyzed on his right side and unable to talk until his death 6 years later, yet continued to use a can of Copenhagen a day, knowing full well it was slowly killing me. But 3,163 days ago, at age 54, I decided there would never be the right time to quit and began the journey back to freedom with total resolve that I would do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, through whatever else is going on. I began that journey just weeks into a new job that was more stressful than any I've ever had and through some difficult experiences that I won't bore you with. As stated by others, the first few days were hell and the triggers were unrelenting for months. I just wanted to be free more than feeding the nicotine slave master. Freedom is worth the price of admission. That freedom is mine as long as I never believe the lie that I could ever again handle "just one". .
  18. If it's any consolation, I once had a year quit going and blew it in moment of anger and frustration. That cave lasted 30 years. I kept telling myself that I'd quit when the time was right. Every time I thought it was about that time, I'd come up with a reason to put it off again. I eventually decided the only perfect time to quit is NOW and that the best time to cave is NEVER. Determine to do whatever it takes to stay free of nicotine. I have never woke up and wished that I had caved the day before.
  19. You have learned the lesson that each of us must know and always remember: We are nicotine addicts and can never have "just one" again. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and begin the journey back to freedom again, committing to do whatever it takes to keep nicotine out of your system. I can assure you that you will reach the place where a whole weekend by yourself will not result in a temptation to throw your freedom away. I can't say exactly when that will be for you, but it has now been many years since I've had that urge, but the lesson you've learned keeps me vigilant against the lies.
  20. Just a note of WARNING: I almost began taking John's Wort but I learned that it is addictive and can result in serious withdrawal when quit.   22. I lost both my uncles within the space of a year from the effects of tobacco. The youngest was 49, the older one was 54. Despite that, it was about 18 years later before I quit at age 54. I'm just over 8 years nicotine-FREE (2,935 days)
  23. I've been nicotine-FREE almost 8 years after an addiction that went back to the 1970s. In the early weeks of the fight, I experienced all sorts of disturbing aches, pains, and twinges that I had not experienced while actively feeding my nicotine addiction. I just assumed they were all part of the huge adjustment my body was making without the poison. I just concentrated on remaining FREE and ignore the rest until I had a good handle on my new freedom. Just a few observations about the journey: * You will never wake up and wish you had caved the day before. * Craves last only a few moments, so just hold on any way you can - chew toothpicks, peanuts, beef jerky, sunflower seeds, sugarless gum, Altoids, or even half a cotton ball (dip it in Listerine for really tough craves). Just not dip. * Dip makes nothing better, it just feeds the addiction we have. * Embrace the fight, knowing that each one makes you stronger. * If you continue to fight one crave, one hour, one day at a time, it WILL get better.
